My boiler is working but I have no hot water

  • by

The majority of UK homes depend on gas combi boilers to provide both hot and heating. While they are efficient and affordable, they have a reputation as being highly reliable. However, being the equipment is usually in use 24/7, 7 every day of the week, it’s inevitable that at times problems could occur. A problem that can be especially frustrating is when heating is on but there’s no hot water from boiler, or you have hot water, but the boiler isn’t warming your house. Find out more about the common causes for these issues and the best way to handle these issues.

1. Verify that you have electricity, gas , and water

The most important thing to do when attempting to resolve issues in the boiler would be to begin with the most basic possible cause. Before you do anything else it is essential to verify that your boiler is in fact working. Start by checking the control panel for your boiler. If there is a digital monitor and no information is displayed it could be because there is no electricity to the boiler because of the power being cut. Try switching on your lights and sockets in order to quickly verify or resolve a problem in the supply of power. It is also possible to check all the fuses within your fuse box have been placed into the proper location.

Similar to that it is equally crucial to ensure that you have both water and gas. You can check these by turning on a faucet and then switching on another gas appliance like your cooker.

If you’ve done everything above, and are satisfied that your power, gas and water supply is functioning, it’s time to look for malfunctioning codes.

2. Do you see a fault code being displayed?

A lot of boiler issues will result in a fault message appearing on the control panel. If you have your operating manual in your possession then this is the most appropriate spot to determine what the fault code on your boiler indicates.

Be aware that boiler fault codes are different between boilers. If you are unable to find an explanation for your fault code or aren’t you are given a manual to follow it is possible to speak with an Gas Safe engineer for assistance.

3. Make sure you check the boiler’s controls.

If you’re still experiencing no heating or hot water after following the above steps You will need to ensure that your boiler’s settings are in order. The boiler has separate controls that turn on the heating as well as hot water. It’s possible that heating or hot water could be switched off in error or the setting has accidentally changed.

Make sure you check the timer.

Certain boilers might include a timer that controls your hot water. If the timer in your boiler regulates your hot water it could be the reason for the issue. The timer could be affected by change in clocks, the power supply, backup batteries not working or perhaps someone changing the settings without your knowledge. Modifying your timer can fix the issue.

Verify the thermostat

The temperature of your heating is typically controlled by thermostats. The majority of boilers will be a dial installed on the wall in the main living space or in the hall. The latest boilers can be equipped with thermostats that are digital. Check that the thermostat hasn’t been set incorrectly to off. Adjust the thermostat for a greater setting with the timer turned on and check to see whether the boiler is able to start. If it does not respond then there could exist a issue with your thermostat. This may require attention from a certified engineer.

4. Verify the valve that diverts your flow.

If you’ve eliminated any other possible causes mentioned above, but there is still there is no hot water, or the boiler’s heating isn’t working, however the water is working, then it’s possible that you are having issues in the valve that diverts heat. It’s valve that opens and closes to supply heating to radiators or to heat the water.

If your heating is functioning however you are experiencing heating and hot water but not hot, or in the reverse direction, it is likely that you have gotten stuck. You’ll need to talk to an Gas Safe engineer to solve the issue with the diverter valve.

The boiler is running, but I don’t have heating or hot water.

If you’ve completed the steps 1 through 4 above but you still are not experiencing hot water or heating, it’s likely that there is a problem in a part that needs attention from an experienced engineer. We suggest having your boiler checked whenever you can.
