Baccarat as described by Seymour in 1897
This game is played as in England in England as “Baccara Banque” or simply “Baccara” but it is played in France as “Baccara two tableaux” – Baccara featuring two tables. It isn’t usually played within the USA. A complete version of rules was published in a “Hoyle” published by Richard Seymour published in 1897.
Players typically bid to determine who will take care of the bank and the bank will be held for the length of the cards in the shoe or until the banker is able to surrender it (whether due to bankruptcy or not). As in other banking games, for each deal, players compete head-to-head with the banker. At the beginning, the banker sets the amount to be played for on the table. Every player is given the option of saying ‘Banco’, and thus ask the banker to play for the entire amount he staked in one go. If this happens, the duel happens directly and there is no other participant directly involved in the deal.
Otherwise, normal play occurs. The players who are not bankers are divided into two halves – one of which is the player to the right of the banker, and the other half being those to the left. A representative for each deal is selected from each half to take on the banker. In the beginning, these are the two players on either from the banker’s side, but in the event that a player loses the right to play is transferred to the next person and until all players on that end of table have played and the role of representative is transferred on the player closest to the banker again. Thus, for every deal, the banker has to play two head-tohead games against the two half-table players.
The banker sets the initial stake and then players take turns to place on the table a stake of any amount until the total for their table is equal to the stake of the banker. The banker will then deal two cards to him, and the two other players. When any banker or players has the total number of 8 or 9 the hands must be displayed immediately and then the two hands that are not shown are followed by a bet being made in accordance with the numbers.
However all three is given a chance to get a third-class face down , beginning at the banker’s left, with the player on the banker’s right and to the banker. If neither of the three players accepts the third card, the banker will have to choose the third card. A third card is dealt face down and the hands are revealed and bets paid accordingly.
If a player holds more money than the banker, the banker pays all bets made on that side of the table. If the hand is lower than that of the banker, the banker collects all bets placed on the other section of the table. Otherwise it is a stand-off and no money exchanged.
Baccarat – Chemin de Fer
In France this particular version that is played is called Baccara un tableau (Baccara with one table) however in the UK and US it is usually referred to as Chemin de Fer. Seymour has mentioned this as a variation of Baccarat and the meaning is that the double-table version came first.
The version that is played here Baccarat is different in two major ways from Baccarat a deaux tableaux. Firstly, for each deal unless someone goes “Banco,” the banker is only playing against the player who is to his right. Secondly, the banker pays or receives a payment from all the players. Furthermore, the bank swaps hands much more frequently. For example, each time the dealer fails to win a coup, the role of the banker is transferred to the player on banker’s left.
