There are a variety of trailer couplings available in the present time, and generally speaking they can be classified into three distinct types:
Rigid trailer coupling device
Detachable/removable trailer coupling device
Sway control coupling device.
Each of these types are valid in their individuality, with its own benefits and drawbacks.
The trailer coupling device, also known as a tow hitch, is attached to the vehicle, and the ball mount protrudes from behind. It’s always visible and usually less expensive to purchase in comparison to the previous two kinds. But this type of coupling device is not authorized or legal in the event that the ball mount is hidden behind the license plate of the vehicle. Another issue is that it may be a nuisance when you’re hittingch-hooking up, and clothing can be soiled. Because there aren’t moving components, this product is simple to maintain and provides adequate protection during parking and maneuvering.
The detachable Knott coupling system consists of a support fixed to the vehicle underneath the bumper (fender US) and a removable mechanical ball mount. The benefit of this configuration is that it doesn’t affect look of the car. Also, it is able to be easily removed and put away in the trunk (trunk US). The drawback is that it’s more costly, and when the ball mount collects debris (salt or corrosion) it could create a problem because the surfaces need to be cleaned.
The sway control device is like the detachable coupling because the ball mount is put in a mechanical fold under the bumper or fender until it’s needed to be utilized. The arrangement offers the same benefits as the detachable coupling however, it is not a part that (ball mount) is required to be put away inside the boot. An automated version of this coupling is available that allows the use of a push button to stop the swaying, thereby leaving the driver without the need for intervention in any manner. It is by far the most costly coupling choice available. The cheaper ones are also equipped with a cable control system that locks the swaying by hand.
Due to the complex nature of this arrangement It is essential to maintain it properly as otherwise, problems could arise.
The rigid coupling is a great purchase if it is utilized frequently and the style of the car isn’t an issue. In other cases, detachable or swing control couplings are the best alternative. Make sure to not use grease or oil on the coupling, otherwise the Sway control mechanism won’t perform as it should.
