Motorhome Essentials You Need

  • by

How to pack a camper or motorhome? What essential kit do you need for your motorhome? This is a list of essential items that every campervan or motorhome should have before departing on their trip.
Motorhome essentials – What do you actually need?

I know, I know. When you find the right motorhome for you, your wallet opens and suddenly you are buying stuff.

So. Much. Stuff.

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine which motorhome essentials you need and which are just… nice to own.

Here’s a list of campervans parts & accessories. These are the most important things EVERY motorhome or campervan should know.

Some are essential for the safety of everyone in the van. Some are essential for safety.

Motorhome accessories essential

Hosepipe

To fill your water tanks, you will need a hosepipe. We recommend at least 10-15m length. It is better to use food grade hose. A proper hose is preferable to a flat one, although a flat one is easier to store.

Connectors are also needed. We like the Hoselock connector, and we use brass adaptors to Europe for various sizes of taps. Remember to bring the connectors! I’ve lost so many in Europe! The cap for the water tank looks great. Just attach your hose to the tank and let it fill up.

240v electric cable

It is a good idea to have a long, 25m, 240v cable. However, don’t let it get too tangled up while you are using it. This can lead to a fire. Spread it on the ground in front of the van. It’s better to not have it on a reel. We also prefer it that way. It is stored in the motorhome storage box. If you have an interior locker, it can also go in the garage.

A splitter is a must as there are many campsites without enough sockets. A 240v plug and an adapter for Europe are required.

Gas Bottle

There are two options: refillable or exchangeable bottles. You can have refillable or exchangeable bottles if you are residing in the UK. The usual size is 30mm. If you use refillable a lot, they are less expensive, but it is becoming harder to find LPG here in the UK. We highly recommend them for those who live in Europe.

Fridge

If you don’t have a 3-way refrigerator, get one. You won’t regret having a 3-way fridge that can run on gas, leisure battery, or 240v power.

Levelling chocks

After only one night, you’ll realize that levelling chocks is a vital part of motorhoming.

The Jumbo bags are a great choice. They take up more space, but are so much more practical than the smaller ones. They can also be used for when they are wet or muddy.

Mud Mats

Have you ever been stuck in mud on your camper holiday? It was not fun.

These mud mats are what saved us from getting out of our puddle. They are essential accessories that you don’t even need. I laughed about it. These are essential accessories for your motorhome! !

Motorhome Safety Kit Essential

A carbon monoxide detector is required if you have gas onboard. A smoke alarm is also required. It is possible to combine the two units. A fire blanket and extinguisher are also useful. These things are INSISTENT after our motorhome fire.

Another essential safety tool is:

A spare bulb kit, fuses, First Aid Kit and Warning Triangle, as well as a basic toolkit and a head torch. The roadside emergency kit includes all of the above, plus additional items.

While we are on the topic, security is important. For added security, we installed a motorhome lock and a number of other motorhome security options.
Tyre Repair Kit

It’s not something we like to think about, but sometimes things can go wrong. It is often a flat tire. Motorhomes don’t have spare tyres, but they do have a tyre fix kit. It should be suitable for large vehicles and it must be heavy-duty.

Sat Nav

A proper sat-nav system is essential for a motorhome. No question about it. It is too large to be messed around with.

Motorhome Essentials- Wing-mirror protectors

These are the best thing you can buy. These are worth every penny, I promise. There are both long and short arm options. Make sure you get the right one for your motorhome.

Essential accessories for motorhome living

You’ll need many things once you get your motorhome started.
Toilet paper & toilet chemicals

Toilet paper for your motorhome is not necessary. The best toilet paper you can buy at a supermarket is PERFECT – it dissolves quickly.

We do recommend toilet chemicals. We have tried many different types of toilet chemicals, including detergent tabs which weren’t effective but did not stop the smell.

Mattress topper & Bedding

It is crucial to have good motorhome bedding. We don’t like sleeping bags and prefer to use proper duvets or pillows. If you want to get a good night’s rest, a mattress protector is also necessary.

Cleaning

It will need to be cleaned if you spend a lot of time in your motorhome. We’ve tried many brands of vacuum cleaners 12v, and Dyson was the best. Make sure you get one that has a 12v charging option. To get into the corners, you’ll need a small brush and dustpan.

Essential accessories for your motorhome: Plates and cutlery

There are many options. Melamine is a tough material that can withstand being dropped accidentally. These are both great, but Amazon has a lot more options. The same goes for cutlery as well as motorhome mugs.

You don’t need to buy large quantities – just enough to make one. You can invite guests or other people to bring their own cups/ plates.

Other essential accessories for your motorhome

Here are a few random tips. You can switch as many interior lights as possible to LED. This will increase your battery life, especially if your goal is to go camping in your motorhome.

You should also make sure you have a way to charge your phone/ipad with the 12v sockets on the front.
