Who Exactly Are Currys PC World?

Currys (branded as Currys PC World from 2010 to 2021) operates as an electronic retailer, and aftercare provider that operates throughout both the United Kingdom and Ireland, which focuses on white goods, consumer electronics as well as mobile phones, computers and computers.

It was founded as a bicycle dealer beginning in 1927. Currys increased the variety of products sold, and in the 1960s, it became a major retailer of household electrical items. In 1984 , the business was purchased by the another retailer Dixons, in which case the Currys brand was used in all retail outlets of the business. In 2008, the business was moving away from shops in towns to more extensive out-of-town locations as part of the Currys PC World brand. The Currys PC World brand was created, consolidating the activities of Currys together with Dixon’s PC World under one structure. After the formation of Dixons Carphone in 2014, the stores were upgraded to Carphone Warehouse departments. It was announced in July 2021 , that in the year 2021 all Currys PC World stores were to be rebranded under the name Currys.

History

The beginning of the year

Henry Curry started to make bicycles in Leicester in 1884. Currys was established into a company in 1927, after four brothers joined The Louth Bicycle Company, and the loose confederation of shops the sons had operated following their father’s retirement in 1909, along with their Nottingham-based Campion Cycle Company.

In the 1940s, stores sold a broad range of goods including bicycles, radios, toys, and toys.

Furthermore, especially under the direction between 1967 to 1984 from Dennis Curry, grandson of Henry Curry, the company experienced significant growth to become a major supplier of televisions and white goods (refrigerators, washing machines as well as other appliances for the home) and by the year 1984 Currys Group plc had 570 shops, which was twice the number of shops owned by the company which was then to acquire it.

When it was founded in 1984, Currys became part of Dixons (another electrical retail chain that is now Currys Plc) but maintained its distinct brand identity. Then, in April of 2006 Dixons Stores Group made it clear that the Dixons shops, except in Ireland and in duty-free areas at airports they would be rebranded under the name Currys.digital (later change the name to Currys Digital). In Ireland, the Dixons shops in Ireland were changed to Currys at the end of August in 2008.

Prior to the Dixons rebranding, the chain was home to just a handful of small town centre shops , compared to its vast array of large out-of-town megastores. The 17th January 2007 group chief executive John Clare announced that when the leases for the remaining ‘Currys High Street’ shops (not the newly rebranded Currys.digital shops) expired, it would be unlikely to renew them: consequently, the shops will be closed at the earliest chance.

Currys PC World

Dixons Retail began a trial combining Currys along with PC World shops in 2008. In the Dixons Carphone Christmas 2015-2016 results update to shareholders, Sebastian James, group director of operations, said that in the coming financial year, the three-in-one format (shops that carry Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse branding under one structure) will be made available across the whole portfolio across and around the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Revival of Currys as the sole brand

Following reorganisations in both 2021 and 2020, Dixons Carphone announced that the Currys PC World stores would change their name to Currys by the end of October in 2021.
