Five Reasons to Visit Victoria Falls

  • by

Victoria Falls, located at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia has always been associated with a romantic Out of Africa feel. The falls are a must-see on any bucket list. Here are five reasons why you should visit Vic Falls.

1. UNESCO World Heritage Site

It is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Victoria Falls as well as the ‘rainforest” that surrounds them are also included. This means they are recognized as having exceptional universal value. The main falls are the highest and widest continuous water stream in the world. They are twice as high than Niagara Falls, and about 500m (1,640ft). The water volume is amazing too. It is believed that New York City’s entire annual water consumption can pass through the falls in only three-and a half days during peak flood season (March and April). The water thunders into the canyon, causing spray to the air that covers everything with mist. This is why the locals refer to Victoria Falls as ‘Mosioa Tunya’ which means the smoke that thunders. This’smoke” can be seen from 50km/31 mi away.

A lunar rainbow can be seen if you visit March to May when there’s enough water. Like a normal rainbow the moonbow occurs when water particles in air reflect light. Victoria Falls opens on the full moon for three nights. Try to arrive at the Falls within an hour of the moon rising for the best results.

2. Zambezi River

One of Africa’s main rivers, the Zambezi, is one. It is the lifeblood of the region and serves as the boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia, on the one hand and Victoria Falls on the other. It is a stunning riverside scene with its blood-red sunsets and sunrises. Ra-Ikane sunset boat cruises along the river are a must to spot hippos, elephants and birds as well as toast the setting sun.

3. Adrenalin Activities

Victoria Falls will provide you with a wide range of adrenaline-boosting activities. The most popular adrenaline activity is undoubtedly the 111m/364ft high-rope jump over the bridge that leads to the falls and into the gorge. White-water Rafting is another popular activity. You should visit the right time of the year to enjoy this activity. White-water Rafting is only possible from August through December as the water levels are lower, making it safer.

You can also cross the iron bridge that connects the Zambian side to the Falls to take a dip in Devil’s Pool. This is the infinity pool with the best view. This experience will take you right up to the edge where the water drops into the gorge below. You will be accompanied by a guide to ensure safety.

This is Zimbabwe’s adrenaline capital, with a gorge swing and flying fox, as well as a zipline over Batoka Gorge.

4. Wildlife

You can reach the falls from both Victoria Falls National Park and Zambezi National Parks in Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia. You can see a wide range of wildlife, including leopard, elephant, lion, and lion as well as many antelope species, such sable, eland and kudu.

Ask about a Hwange National Park day trip if you’re keen on wildlife and safari experiences. The Falls are only an hour away from Zimbabwe’s largest national parks. Chobe National Park is located in Botswana and is just 80 minutes from the Falls. This park is famous for its enormous elephant and buffalo herds. These parks offer some of the finest wildlife viewing in southern Africa.

5. A Different Perspective

Once you have seen Victoria Falls close up, it’s time to take off in a helicopter. The Falls’ sheer size will amaze you from the sky. The helicopter will fly several passes above the falls if you select the heliflip. This allows everyone to capture them from wherever they are sitting. Hang onto your phone or camera if you opt for the microlight. It’s even better to attach it with a cable to make sure it doesn’t get lost if it falls.
